| The M&P is the latest in the evolution of the polymer-framed autopistol that Glock started all those years ago and represents a significant advance. The .45 is mechanically the same as the other M&P chamberings and the only notable difference is a slightly longer barrel. The important thing is the grip is no larger and the interchangeable grip panels for the 9mm and .40 S&W also fit the .45. Even though the .45 ACP cartridge is longer than either the 9 or 40, S&W was able to accommodate the length needed for the larger magazine with internal changes in the mold for the frame so it feels no different to the hand. The slide and barrel are both 1/4" longer. Get the full story in the American Handgunner Special Edition 2008 Annual! >> Order Now << |

| The dimensions of the world’s wildernesses are shrinking while we watch, and even those places we can’t drive to are becoming so crowded with nature lovers they hardly permit the feeling of freedom that is the adventurer’s age-old joy. However, there are places left, and since we don’t know how soon they will be polluted by more roads, more people, and more regulations, let’s hasten to enjoy them while we may. With a case, and a good trail gun on the hip, a man can still find peace, freedom and self reliance, even in the space age.” Get the full story in the American Handgunner Special Edition 2008 Annual! >> Order Now << |

| FUN GUNS It’s Not All Serious Stuff Clint Smith |

| Over the years, I gathered a few firearms and, like many things in life, I think I have gone though stages, spells or fits if you like. At one time in my 30s I collected Smith & Wesson handguns and had, shall we say, more handguns than I could have worn out in several lifetimes. I did a gig with NFA stuff and shot belt-fed guns and automatic weapons to the tune of hundreds of thousands of rounds — especially in my era of working for Heckler & Koch. I had a fondness for military arms and as a history buff I owned at one time every version of the 1903 Springfields, the M1 Garands and M1 Carbines. | In the 1970s it was my regular habit to read section 640 GUNS every day in the morning paper classifieds as well as attend all the local gun shows. With this diligence I expected to find one special sixgun per year. It may be a like new 3-1/2" Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum, or an unfired Old Model Ruger .41 Magnum, even a Second Generation Colt Single Action. | “As-Salamu Alaikum!” The young man greeted the usher as he was about to enter through the ornately carved golden doors of the Mosque. The usher looked directly into the young man’s eyes but didn’t reply. There was just enough of a pause signaling to both men something was not right. The young man stepped forward precisely as the usher moved to block his way. “Wait a moment you!” Get the full story in the American Handgunner Special Edition 2008 Annual! >> Order Now << |
