  The M&P is the latest in the evolution of the polymer-framed autopistol that Glock started all those years ago and represents a significant advance. The .45 is mechanically the same as the other M&P chamberings and the only notable difference is a slightly longer barrel. The important thing is the grip is no larger and the interchangeable grip panels for the 9mm and .40 S&W also fit the .45.

Even though the .45 ACP cartridge is longer than either the 9 or 40, S&W was able to accommodate the length needed for the larger magazine with internal changes in the mold for the frame so it feels no different to the hand. The slide and barrel are both 1/4" longer.

  Over the years, I gathered a few firearms and, like many things in life, I think I have gone though stages, spells or fits if you like. At one time in my 30s I collected Smith & Wesson handguns and had, shall we say, more handguns than I could have worn out in several lifetimes. I did a gig with NFA stuff and shot belt-fed guns and automatic weapons to the tune of hundreds of thousands of rounds — especially in my era of working for Heckler & Koch. I had a fondness for military arms and as a history buff I owned at one time every version of the 1903 Springfields, the M1 Garands and M1 Carbines.
