Two guns look right at home in this guise —
but do they work in the real world?

Most of the western movies of our childhood showed heroes and villains heeled with two handguns. Carrying two handguns could have been a good thing. Sixguns, then, required the prudent to load only five, making 10 at-hand. This 10-round concept could be a stunning shock to today’s polymer kids with their upwards of 20-odd round mag capacities. Plus, the act of simply loading a sixgun is a more complex manipulation.
Sixguns also require finer motor skills, complex to apply when you’re under fire from bullet — or arrow. Magazine-fed handguns can be loaded smoothly using gross motor skills. The steel and plastic hi-cap handguns of today seem to resolve it all when there’s a need to maintain continuity of fire in a gunfight. Or do they?

Immediate action drills (the proverbial, tap rack, stovepipe or double feed) can be cleared pretty simply, but many fumble through the process. The problem is most don’t regularly practice the IAD responses required to bring an auto back on-line. Most people carrying semiautos don’t have a friggin clue what to do when the pistol goes down. I see it all the time. And all of this is ironic. In the late 1970s when the majority carried revolvers, the hue and cry was “Those damned autos jam.” If you were carrying a revolver and the gun didn’t fire you could just press the trigger again. Then again, a revolver doesn’t have much ammo. And so it goes on, even today.
