Federal Solid Core Ammunition

When it comes to ammunition, make no bones about it: Deep penetration combined with large wound channels is a killing combination. But when bones are struck, we need a bullet capable of plowing through and staying the course. It sounds gruesome, but that’s what’s needed for hunting and protection. Luckily, Federal has just the bullet for the job.

Cast Meets Polymer

What comes around goes around, especially in the shooting world. Cast bullets have been known as notorious killers, especially in flat-nosed design. The meplat, or flat nose, is what causes the wound channel, and the larger the meplat, the larger the wound channel. Add velocity, and the wound channel grows, much like a boat wake in water.

The one drawback cast bullets have is a tendency to lead your barrel when the bullet is driven too fast for conditions, causing a breakdown involving bullet lube, alloy composition, barrel condition or bullet size, to name a few.

In 2017, Federal resolved those issues with polymer-encapsulated Syntech bullets, eliminating metal-on-metal contact between the bullet and bore to decrease heat exchange while shooting, increasing barrel life and improving accuracy. First offered for target shooting, Syntech ammo has since been made for training, competition and self-defense — and now handgun hunting.

Core Calibers

While not quite available yet — Federal is aiming for an April/May release — we do have some details on the new dangerous-game ammo line.

Initial Solid Core offerings will include the following popular handgun hunting calibers: 147-gr. 9mm +P; 180-gr. .357 Mag., 200-gr. .40 S&W and 10mm, 240-gr. .45 ACP +P and 300-gr. .44 Rem. Mag. I just wish they’d add a heavy .45 Colt load for Ruger-strength revolvers to the lineup.

MSRP will range from $28.99 to $39.99 per box of 20 rounds, depending of caliber.
