Steel Will Gekko 1550

This folding knife boasts no single exceptional feature and yet has nothing you’d want to change. Basic, yes. Boring, no. Beautifully executed, for sure. We’re talking Italian-made, smooth-operating, robustly-crafted and well-balanced, end to end. The blade steel is N690Co, of Austrian origin, and as good or better than 440C when it comes to resisting wear and durability with a 58-60 HRC. Treated with a satin finish, nicks and scratches won’t really show up and so you’ll be tempted to use the Gekko not only on basic cutting tasks but also on those you’d normally reserve for a larger or seemingly tougher knife. A Micarta handle provides plenty of purchase and, with its unique feel, also exudes durability.

As for specs, it’s overall length measures 7.87″ with 3.5″ being the blade. It measures an average or medium 4.37″ when folded. Blade width and total weight is just right at 0.14″ and 4.76 oz., respectively. A handy lanyard hole exists at the base of the handle but it’d be more apt to use the protruding steel as a sort of pommel. Flick the blade open with either thumb stud and it smoothly locks in place with an excellent lockback mechanism. This one is set up for right-handed carry with a pocket clip, tip up. But you can switch to left-handed carry, too. Favorite features: All of them, really. Best descriptors: Smooth and strong. Retail price: $199.99.
