A 1911 That Takes Me Back
I’m showing you this pistol for no particularly good reason other than I think it’s pretty. And sometimes, that’s reason enough to buy a gun.
This is a Tisas 1911, roughly Commander-sized and finished in a beautiful electroless nickel. That finish is actually what convinced me to buy it — because apparently, even at my age, I still can’t stop buying guns.
It also takes me right back to the early 1970s when I was starting my law enforcement career. Back then, if you were a gun guy, one of the guns to have was a satin nickel Colt Commander. Naturally, I owned one in .45 ACP. And, like so many guns I wish I still had, I foolishly sold it years ago.
When I saw this Tisas, all those memories came flooding back.
I did make one concession to getting older: This one’s a 9mm. After a lifetime of shooting silly big guns for American Handgunner, my wrists appreciate it.
The pistol has that classic nickel look, along with a ramped barrel and Mec-Gar magazines. Even the sights are nickel, which looks great — although actually seeing them is another matter.
For its first range trip, I loaded up some Black Hills HoneyBadger 9mm and set a target at about 10 yards. My first few shots weren’t anything to brag about, but as I settled into the pistol, things tightened up nicely. It seemed to shoot a little high and left, but there’s definitely some accuracy there.
I think this one’s going to be a shooter. And even if it weren’t, I’d probably keep it just because it’s so darn handsome.
