The Basic Drawing Stroke
In the Basic Drawing Stroke video, Roy reminds us of the four stroke maneuver for drawing a handgun from a holster:
First, assuming you’re a right handed shooter, your right hand should acquire a proper firing grip on your holstered gun. At the same time, your left hand should go flat against your belt buckle. This keeps your left hand out of the way of the gun and its muzzle during the draw.
Second, draw the gun out of the holster and pivot your hand so the gun points forward. Also, roll the gun out so the slide moves out away from your body. This will prevent the slide from contacting your body, possibly causing a malfunction, should you have to fire the gun at very close quarters. Your left hand should still be on your belt buckle.
Third, begin to move the gun forward with your right hand. At this point bring your left hand to your right hand, assuming a proper firing grip on the gun.
Fourth, extend the muzzle of the gun out toward your target, obtaining a proper sight picture, and assess whether to shoot, re-aim, scan, and so on.
To reholster, just reverse the process. Make sure you keep your finger outside the trigger guard.
Finally, Roy reminds viewers to do this exercise safely, slowly, carefully, and methodically. He also recommends getting training from a qualified professional.
