Volquartsen Black Mamba
at 75 Yards
I’ve been having a lot of fun with my Volquartsen Black Mamba, and this time I wanted to see what it could do with an EOTECH red dot mounted on top.
I’d previously shot this pistol at 100 yards with iron sights and managed a best group of around three inches. This time, I brought the target up to 75 yards. Why? Because the 3 MOA dot covers so much of the target at 100 yards that, at least with my aging eyes, it becomes difficult to hold as precisely as I’d like.
Before shooting, I want to point out one feature that really sets this pistol apart: Volquartsen’s Competition Bolt. It’s DLC coated for exceptional durability and smooth operation, and it also fits Ruger Mark II, III and IV pistols. Combined with Volquartsen’s proprietary extractor and firing pin, it does an outstanding job of improving reliability and virtually eliminating the stovepipes and failures to fire that rimfire shooters occasionally encounter.
Using CCI Select ammunition, I settled in at 75 yards and fired a five-shot group. We weren’t trying to set any world records — we were just having fun — and the pistol turned in a group right around two inches. Not bad for an old guy with a red dot.
The biggest limitation wasn’t the pistol — it was the size of the dot covering the target. My next experiment will be mounting a magnified rifle scope and moving back out to 100 yards. I have a feeling the Black Mamba has even more accuracy waiting to be uncovered.
