Armscor Nickel-Plated 38Super

I’ll admit it — I have a weakness for nickel-plated 1911s. I don’t know why, but I just can’t help myself.

This one is a Rock Island Armory (Armscor) .38 Super, a classic 5-inch pistol that already had plenty of appeal. But for me, it wasn’t complete until I gave it a little border-town flair.

I grew up in San Diego and later served as a San Diego police officer, so I spent plenty of time around the U.S.-Mexico border. Back then, we’d often encounter Mexican federales who carried beautifully engraved, nickel-plated Colt .38 Supers. Many wore elaborate gold- and silver-colored grips, sometimes adorned with eagles, the Virgin Mary or even gemstones. They were proud of those pistols, and I was always fascinated by them.

Years later, I found myself browsing eBay when I came across a set of decorative grips that instantly brought back those memories. They’re not solid gold or silver like some of the originals, but they’re surprisingly well made. I even splurged on gold-plated grip screws to complete the look.

Every time I pick up this pistol, I’m reminded of those days shooting at ranges around Ensenada, talking guns with federales and admiring sidearms that were every bit as much works of art as they were working pistols.

I’ve already done another video showing this gun on the range, so this one is simply about appreciating a handgun that makes me smile every time I open the safe. Sometimes that’s reason enough to own a gun.
