[…] any exploring showed a few high notes, which I’ll share, in no particular order here. 1 Kimber: A big surprise to everyone was Kimber’s brand new SOLO Carry, a “designed from a blank slate” pocket 9mm, that’s really pocket-sized. Striker fired, it has a DA feeling trigger, ambi-safeties and superior ergonomics. Check out our July/Aug 2011 issue for a big feature on it. We were very impressed. www.kimberamerica.com 2. Cylinder & Slide: Bill Laughridge showcased his virtually made-from-scratch-to-painstakingly-original-specifications 1911. His are actually built exactly like first commercial runs, circa-1913. I even sorta’ accidently supplied Bill with a first production run original magazine he found when digging in my spare mag box at my house during the last 1911 class! He used it to create his “new” old ones. This is a stunner of a gun. Bill is making a very limited run so reach out now if you want one! www.cylinder-slide.com >> Click Here AHMJ11col handgunner mj

Parts Gun Rebirth

[…] seems goofy in retrospect but it was just the way we did it. Then Kimber (and some semi-custom gunmakers) made the astute decision to build guns the way shooters wanted to start with, and the modern 1911 was the result. One of the best of those semi-custom makers is Nighthawk Custom. Nighthawk offers several well-designed models using their own frames/slides and other components. Sometimes we need to be reminded Nighthawk is a true custom shop. They can work on a pistol you already own, anything from a basic trigger job to a full-house custom. There are thousands of basically sound, traditional 1911-style pistols which can be made more shootable with some custom work. The Nighthawk website indicates they will build on your Colt, Springfield Armory or Kimber pistol. This isn’t because other makes are deemed unworthy, but because these manufacturers made considerable numbers of pistols known to be made to close tolerances, of quality steel properly heat-treated. >> Click Here Click Here AHJA11col July/August 2011
